Real Madrid Cool Interest in Manchester City's Rodri, Reports Claim
Real Madrid have reportedly cooled their interest in signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez, according to reports from Spain. The Spanish international had been a long-term target for Los Blancos, but their interest has reportedly waned following his performances in the Champions League.
According to Spanish journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, Madrid's hierarchy has been left with doubts following the player's performance in the recent Champions League tie between the clubs. Real Madrid faced Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16, securing a 5-1 aggregate victory, during which Rodri was unable to exert his usual influence on the game. The 29-year-old's display has reportedly caused a significant re-evaluation of the potential transfer.
Alvarez de Mon reports that while no final decision has been made, the club's interest has cooled significantly. The midfielder's performances for Spain at the upcoming FIFA World Cup this summer could be a final factor in Madrid's decision. The 29-year-old has just over a year remaining on his current contract at the Etihad Stadium, and Manchester City are reportedly keen to extend his deal.
Rodri himself recently opened the door to a return to La Liga, stating that his past with Atletico Madrid would not prevent him from joining their city rivals, Real Madrid. Despite the cooling of interest, the Spain international has been a pivotal figure for Pep Guardiola's side, but his recent performances in high-stakes matches have seemingly given the Spanish giants pause.
Real Madrid are expected to continue their search for a deep-lying midfielder, with Paris Saint-Germain's Vitinha, AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton all linked as alternative targets. For Manchester City, the priority remains securing Rodri to a new long-term contract, which would significantly strengthen their negotiating position should Madrid's interest be rekindled in the future.
