Manchester United are showing a serious interest in signing Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with one source close to the club indicating a deal this summer "is possible." The France international, who has started 42 games for Madrid this season, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford, where the new INEOS regime is prioritizing midfield reinforcements. However, conflicting reports from Spain suggest Real Madrid have no intention of selling a player they consider indispensable and are instead preparing to open talks over a new contract.
According to reliable journalist Andy Mitten, speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, United's interest is long-standing, having been originally recommended by former interim manager Ralf Rangnick four years ago. Mitten stated his understanding has been for several months that a transfer "is possible," though he suggested it could also be a tactic from the player's camp to secure improved terms at the Bernabeu. The midfielder's current deal runs until 2028, but Foot Mercato reports Madrid want to extend it, viewing Tchouameni as a key and versatile component of their squad.
The potential move comes as United plan a significant overhaul of their engine room following a summer of 2025 that focused heavily on the forward line. The club is expected to target at least two midfield signings, with Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali also on their radar. Tchouameni, however, represents a more established and experienced option, having won major honours with Madrid and been a regular for the French national team.
Any deal for the 26-year-old would likely command a fee in excess of £70 million, a significant outlay for a player who would be expected to immediately anchor United's midfield. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand expressed enthusiasm for the potential signing on his YouTube channel, praising Tchouameni's commanding performances in big games, but also questioned his availability, noting, "I don’t know if he’s available." Ferdinand described him as a "fantastic footballer" with the experience and strength to thrive in the Premier League.
TEAMtalk's transfer insider Graeme Bailey has confirmed United's interest but also noted that Liverpool hold a long-standing admiration for the player. More critically, Bailey reported that Tchouameni himself has no desire to leave the Spanish capital, with the club equally firm in their stance to keep him. This creates a significant obstacle for United, who would need to persuade both the player and a club with little financial need to sell to part with a core asset.
The situation underscores the challenge facing United's recruitment team as they aim to attract elite talent currently at Europe's very top clubs. While the interest is genuine and a move remains a theoretical possibility, the prevailing momentum appears to be with Real Madrid securing Tchouameni's long-term future, leaving United to potentially explore other, more attainable targets in a crucial summer window.
