Stade Rennais have announced the signing of Adrien Thomasson from RC Lens, effective immediately, in what marks the club’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window. The 32-year-old midfielder joins Rennes on a free transfer after his contract with Lens expired, signing a three-year deal with the Breton club.
Thomasson departs Lens after three seasons with the club, having captained them to Coupe de France success last weekend. He bid farewell to the club and its supporters via social media prior to the confirmation of the transfer. Rennes’ sporting director, Loïc Désiré, and owner, François-Henri Pinault, had openly discussed their interest in bringing Thomasson to the club in recent statements.
The move represents a significant addition for Rennes, with Thomasson bringing a wealth of experience and attacking prowess to their midfield. Last season, he was a key performer for Lens, contributing both goals and assists, and becoming a pivotal figure in Franck Haise’s side. He has previously played for Évian Thonon Gaillard, Nantes, and Strasbourg in France’s top flight.
While Rennes will participate in the Europa League next season, Thomasson will forgo Champions League football with his new club. However, the financial package offered by Rennes is reported to be more favorable than what Lens could offer, influencing his decision. The arrival of Thomasson is expected to bolster Rennes’ attacking options and strengthen their position in Ligue 1 as they aim to challenge at the top of the table.
