Sporting CP have emerged as rivals to Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, according to a report in A Bola. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan with Tottenham, and the London club hold a €30 million option to make the deal permanent. However, Sporting are now attempting to bring Palhinha back to the club where he began his professional career.
Palhinha enjoyed a productive loan spell at Tottenham, becoming a key component in midfield under Ange Postecoglou. He made 35 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating the defensive solidity and passing range that initially attracted Bayern Munich to sign him from Fulham for €50 million two years prior. Despite his success in North London, a return to Portugal appears to be a strong possibility for the player.
A Bola reports that Palhinha is prepared to take a substantial pay cut to rejoin Sporting CP, with a verbal agreement already believed to be in place between the player and the Lisbon outfit. This willingness to reduce his salary underlines his desire to return to his boyhood club, where he progressed through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut in 2017.
Negotiations are currently ongoing between Sporting and Bayern Munich, but a deal could prove challenging to finalize. Bayern are reportedly keen to recoup a significant portion of the fee they paid to Fulham, making Sporting’s preference for a loan deal with an option to buy potentially difficult to achieve. The German champions are unlikely to agree to another temporary move for Palhinha, especially given their initial investment.
Should Sporting be able to agree a fee with Bayern, Palhinha would add considerable experience and quality to their midfield. The Portuguese side finished fourth in the Primeira Liga last season and will be aiming to challenge for the title in the upcoming campaign, with Palhinha potentially playing a crucial role in those ambitions. A move to Sporting would also allow Palhinha to continue playing Champions League football.
