Stade Rennais are planning a significant summer overhaul following a season that saw them qualify for the Europa League through Lens’ Coupe de France victory. Club president Arnaud Pouille stated the club has “regained alignment with the demands and ambitions of its supporters” and hopes for further progress next season.
Despite narrowly missing out on a direct Champions League spot, Rennes are looking ahead with optimism, recently appointing Nicolas de Tavernost as the new chairman to strengthen the club’s position within French football. The sporting director, Loïc Désiré, alongside head coach Franck Haise, will lead the transfer activity. Rennes are aiming to bring in three new players before the end of June, with Adrien Thomasson’s arrival already confirmed.
Thomasson joins as the first piece of the puzzle for a team looking to bolster its squad for European competition. Désiré indicated the club is prioritizing the recruitment of a central defender and a “versatile attacker, different from what we’ve had until now, capable of playing centrally and wide”. While other positions, such as right-back, are being considered, the focus remains on these two key areas.
Przemysław Frankowski, hampered by injuries this past season, is proactively returning to pre-season training a week early to ensure he is fully fit. Rennes are aiming for a squad size of 20-21 players, integrating youth academy prospects like the Do Marcolino brothers, Henrick and Jonathan, to maintain their commitment to developing young talent. Désiré also emphasized the need for increased character within the squad, stating they “sometimes suffered the events” and require a stronger mentality.
Financial constraints are a consideration, with Rennes needing to adhere to UEFA’s strict financial fair play regulations. While the club is currently compliant, careful spending will be necessary. Several players could depart, including Djaoui Cissé, while Ludovic Blas is entering the final year of his contract. Despite interest from other clubs, Rennes are determined to retain their top goalscorer, Estéban Lepaul.
