Borussia Dortmund veteran Marco Reus believes Jürgen Klopp will eventually manage the German national team, despite the current head coach being under contract with Red Bull until 2029. Reus, who enjoyed a successful spell playing under Klopp at Dortmund, expressed his confidence in the 58-year-old’s suitability for the role in an interview with Sports Illustrated Deutschland.
While acknowledging the current leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, Reus stated that Klopp’s “style and his abilities” would make him an “excellent” Germany coach. He went on to assert his conviction that Klopp will one day take the position, suggesting a widespread expectation within German football circles. The comments come amid ongoing speculation linking Klopp with a return to management at the international level.
Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season after a hugely successful nine-year tenure, during which he won the Premier League, Champions League, and other major honours. He transitioned into a consultancy role with Red Bull, overseeing their football operations across multiple clubs, including RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg. Despite repeatedly expressing contentment with his current position, Klopp has not entirely closed the door on a return to the touchline.
In a January interview with Bulinews.com, Klopp conceded that his future plans remain open-ended. While currently satisfied with his role at Red Bull, he acknowledged the possibility of coaching again, stating he couldn’t rule it out “never, never, never.” He indicated that a potential return would depend on his feelings at the time, rather than a pre-determined desire to return to management. Klopp’s comments suggest he remains open to opportunities that genuinely appeal to him, potentially including the German national team.
The German Football Association (DFB) has faced scrutiny in recent years regarding the national team’s performance, leading to calls for a change in leadership. Nagelsmann was appointed in September 2023 following the dismissal of Hansi Flick, and is currently preparing the team for Euro 2024 on home soil. However, the long-term future of the position remains a topic of discussion, and Klopp’s name continues to be prominently mentioned as a potential successor. Should Klopp eventually accept the role, it would mark a significant moment for German football, bringing in one of its most successful and charismatic figures.
