Former Norway international John Arne Riise has downplayed speculation surrounding the future of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, suggesting a summer transfer is unlikely. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks, with the club also heavily pursuing Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes.
Odegaard, currently preparing for a World Cup quarter-final with Norway, scored one goal and provided six assists in 32 Premier League appearances last season. He has two years remaining on his current contract, leading to questions about his long-term commitment to the club. However, Riise believes Odegaard’s status as captain and his apparent happiness in North London make a departure improbable.
“Is Martin Odegaard’s time up at Arsenal? I can understand people thinking that, but at the same time, he’s the captain,” Riise told FootballTransfers. “He performs well, and you can see at the World Cup that he’s in good shape and has done well for Norway. I’m not sure how long his contract is, but I can’t picture him leaving because he’s obviously happy there and he’s the captain.”
Reports suggest Arsenal may consider a sale to fund a move for Rogers, who Aston Villa value at over €120 million. The Gunners are also in advanced talks for Guimaraes, adding to a crowded attacking midfield that already includes Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Kai Havertz, Ethan Nwaneri, and Odegaard. Nwaneri has been heavily linked with a move away, and Odegaard’s position has been questioned as a result.
Despite the potential for squad congestion, Riise believes Odegaard’s importance to Mikel Arteta’s plans means an exit is unlikely. He also highlighted the need for Odegaard to build momentum after a season impacted by injuries, to regain full support from the fanbase.
