Rijeka president Damir Mišković has revealed that several young players owned by Fiorentina turned down loan offers from the Croatian club last summer, according to a report by TheCroatian. Mišković detailed the situation while discussing the transfer of Antonín Fruk to the club, stating that Fiorentina had fifty players under contract at the time.
Following discussions with Fiorentina’s directors regarding Fruk’s move, Mišković proposed a deal to take some of the Italian club’s surplus players on loan. He believed that playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League would provide a valuable platform for these players to gain experience and increase their market value. “When last summer we were in full negotiation with Fiorentina for the transfer of Fruk, the managers confided to me that the company counted as many as fifty players under contract on the payroll,” Mišković said. “Hearing that number, I seized the opportunity and made a proposal: ‘Well, then give some of them to me on a temporary basis. This year we will play in the Conference League and our showcase could prove to be a golden opportunity to allow someone to show off and enhance themselves.’”
However, the proposal was met with resistance from the players themselves. Mišković expressed his surprise and disappointment that none of the Fiorentina players, even those outside of the first team, were interested in a move to Rijeka. He noted that the players appeared to prefer the opportunity of playing in the Italian Serie B. “How did that affair end? Not a single player owned by Fiorentina, including the second lines or the elements furthest from the orbit of the first team, considered our offer,” Mišković explained. “No one accepted the transfer to Croatia. Evidently, Italian Serie B exerts a charm on the boys far superior to our championship and our club, despite the possibility of treading the European stages.”
Fiorentina currently find themselves in a period of squad management, with a large number of players contracted to the club. This situation highlights the challenges of balancing a large squad and ensuring playing time for all members. The preference of the players for Serie B over the Croatian league could be attributed to factors such as perceived league quality, proximity to Italy, or existing career aspirations. This situation does not appear to have impacted Fiorentina’s transfer strategy, but it does offer insight into the priorities of some of their younger players.
