Enrique Riquelme, a candidate in Sunday’s Real Madrid presidential election, has announced his intention to approach Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp with a proposal to become the club’s next head coach should he win the election. The announcement was made via a statement released by Riquelme’s campaign team, challenging incumbent president Florentino Pérez, who has held the position since 2009.
Riquelme is actively outlining potential signings and appointments as the election nears, having previously mentioned Erling Haaland – a claim denied by sources close to the player – as well as Rodri and Raúl as potential additions to the club. He also suggested Fernando Hierro could be appointed to oversee the club’s youth academy. These announcements are intended to present a clear vision for the future of the club should he succeed Pérez.
Pérez, in turn, has responded with his own show of intent, publishing a video on his campaign’s X account featuring José Mourinho wearing a Real Madrid shirt. This is widely interpreted as a signal of Mourinho’s potential return to the Santiago Bernabéu if Pérez is re-elected. Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España titles.
Klopp has been at Liverpool since 2015, transforming the club into one of Europe’s elite forces and delivering a Premier League title, Champions League trophy, and numerous other honors. He announced in January 2024 that he will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the current season, making him a highly sought-after figure amongst top European clubs. His tactical acumen and ability to build a strong team culture are highly valued.
The outcome of Sunday’s election will significantly shape the future direction of Real Madrid, with both candidates presenting contrasting visions for the club’s on-field and off-field strategy. Should Riquelme win and successfully appoint Klopp, it would represent a significant shift in managerial approach for the Spanish giants.
