Roberto De Zerbi Appointed Tottenham Hotspur Manager
Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach, the Premier League club confirmed on Wednesday. The 44-year-old Italian has signed a long-term contract at White Hart Lane, replacing Igor Tudor, who departed the club earlier this month. De Zerbi was officially unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, March 31st, and will take charge of his first match this weekend.
De Zerbi, who has been out of management since leaving Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the previous Premier League season, admitted the move came together quickly. Speaking to Sky Sport, the coach said, "Frankly, I thought I would come to the Premier League next year. Then, after, the last contact with Tottenham was very quick and I saw that I had time to get involved and understand what to do. I took it as a great opportunity. I wanted to take some time off to rest, but this happened and I jumped right in."
He takes over a Spurs side that has struggled in recent seasons, with the club currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table. De Zerbi acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "Tottenham is a great club. There are great players. It has won few games in 2025 and none in 2026. The key, I think, is not tactical but more mental. I'm not a magician. My predecessors were both good coaches. I don't have a magic wand. I hope to bring something of my own from a character point of view and then a few things from a technical point of view."
His first match in charge will be a Premier League fixture against Sunderland this Sunday. The appointment marks a significant return to the touchline for De Zerbi, who has been linked with several top jobs since his successful spell with Brighton, where his attacking philosophy earned widespread praise. His arrival signals Tottenham's intent to adopt a more progressive, possession-based style of play, a hallmark of his previous teams. The 44-year-old is known for his intense, high-pressing and possession-dominant football, a style that will be a significant departure from the more pragmatic approach seen under his predecessor.
De Zerbi's immediate task will be to improve a squad that has won just once in its last ten outings across all competitions. His appointment is seen as a long-term project, with the club's hierarchy believing his tactical acumen and track record of developing young players aligns with their vision for the future. His first test will be a tricky away trip to the Stadium of Light, where he will be under immediate pressure to improve the team's results and performances.
