Roma’s potential move for Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood is facing resistance from a section of the club’s supporters. A petition against the transfer has gained nearly 500 signatures in just two days, according to reports in Italy.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly keen to sign Greenwood, believing the forward could significantly improve the team’s attacking options. The club has reportedly reached an economic agreement with the player, offering a salary of around €5 million per season, and are now in discussions with his current club, Marseille, regarding a permanent transfer. However, the forward’s past legal issues are causing concern.
The opposition stems from allegations of violence and abuse made by Greenwood’s former partner, Harriet Robson, which led to a criminal investigation. While the legal proceedings were later dropped, the controversy continues to surround the player and his public image. Supporters initiating the petition argue that signing Greenwood would contradict Roma’s stated values and recent campaigns against gender-based violence.
The petition’s author stated the opposition isn’t based on a lack of belief in rehabilitation, but rather on the responsibility of a club to represent its values. The petition highlights Roma’s previous involvement in initiatives such as “Amami e Basta”, a campaign against gender violence, and argues that signing Greenwood would create a significant inconsistency between the club’s public stance and its actions. Concerns are also raised about the potential impact on sponsors, partners, the women’s team, youth players, and fans who may have experienced domestic violence.
The petition calls on Roma to abandon the pursuit of Greenwood and continue building its future in line with its established principles. The club has not yet publicly responded to the petition, but the growing opposition adds a complex layer to the potential transfer. Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe, where he scored eight goals in 35 appearances, demonstrating a return to form after a period away from the game.
Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season and are looking to strengthen their squad to challenge for European qualification. The addition of Greenwood, if it materialises, could provide a significant boost to their attacking options, but the club must now navigate the growing backlash from supporters.
