Former Brazil international Ronaldinho is reportedly in talks to come out of retirement and play for Ravenna Football Club 1913, a Serie C side in Italy, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The 2002 World Cup winner, who hasn’t played competitively since 2018, could be officially announced as a Ravenna player on June 23rd during an event in Miami.
Ronaldinho, 44, has been an active participant in exhibition matches and promotional events since retiring, but a move to Ravenna would mark a return to professional football. The club, based in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, confirmed that Ronaldinho is a shareholder, which adds another layer to the potential deal. While the specifics of a contract have not been disclosed, reports suggest any involvement would be limited, potentially to short appearances.
The Brazilian playmaker enjoyed a decorated career, winning the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and Champions League titles with Barcelona. He also had spells at Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Flamengo, becoming known for his exceptional skill and flair. His last competitive appearance came for Fluminense in 2015, followed by a brief stint with Querétaro in Mexico in 2018.
Ronaldinho himself stated, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, “Football has always been a source of joy for me. I want to transmit this same energy to Ravenna.” The move is seen as a way for Ronaldinho to remain connected to the game he loves and potentially contribute to a club in which he has a financial stake. Ravenna finished 16th in Serie C Group B last season, and the addition of a player of Ronaldinho’s stature, even in a limited role, could generate significant interest and boost the club’s profile.
