Antonio Rudiger has extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2027, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The defender’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of this month, creating a period of uncertainty around his future at the Santiago Bernabéu. The extension secures Rudiger’s services for a further four years, solidifying his place in the heart of the Madrid defence.
Rudiger joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 following his departure from Chelsea. He quickly established himself as a key player under Carlo Ancelotti, featuring regularly in La Liga and the Champions League. The 33-year-old has made 71 appearances for Los Blancos, contributing defensively and occasionally with goals from set-pieces. He has won one Champions League title and one Club World Cup with the club.
According to reports, a significant factor in Rudiger’s decision to renew was the impending arrival of José Mourinho as the new Real Madrid manager. The German international described the opportunity to work with Mourinho as “a dream,” suggesting a strong personal desire to play under the Portuguese tactician. Mourinho is expected to take charge at the end of the current season.
Real Madrid have been active in the transfer market, recently completing deals for Ousmane Dembélé, Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, and Marc Cucurella. These signings, combined with retaining key players like Rudiger, signal the club’s ambition to return to winning ways after a trophyless season, a situation Mourinho himself labelled as “zero títulos”. The club will be hoping that with a refreshed squad and a new manager, they can challenge for major honours once again. This extension ensures defensive stability as they pursue those ambitions.
Rudiger recently represented Germany in their 7-1 victory over Curaçao, marking the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. He expressed his contentment with his continued future at Real Madrid following the match, emphasizing his excitement about the prospect of collaborating with Mourinho.
