Allan Saint-Maximin is the subject of transfer negotiations with Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC, according to reports emerging from both France and the United States. The 29-year-old winger, who recently enjoyed a successful short-term spell with Lens, is a potential replacement for Wilfried Zaha as Charlotte’s designated player.
Saint-Maximin joined Lens in February after terminating his contract with Mexican club Club América. He quickly established himself as a key player for the Ligue 1 side, contributing four goals and three assists in 13 matches and playing a significant role in their Coupe de France triumph. Lens had offered him a contract until the end of the season following his arrival, but his impressive form has attracted interest from abroad.
Charlotte FC are reportedly keen to secure Saint-Maximin’s services, offering him a designated player status which would allow them to circumvent salary cap restrictions. Designated player spots are highly coveted in MLS, reserved for players deemed to be transformative talents. Zaha currently occupies one of those spots, but his form has been inconsistent since joining the club.
Lens sporting director Jean-Louis Leca has publicly expressed his desire to retain Saint-Maximin, acknowledging the player’s impact since his arrival. However, the club are facing competition from Charlotte’s financial offer and the appeal of a move to MLS. While sources in the United States suggest a deal is nearing completion, officials at Lens have not yet confirmed any agreement at this time.
Saint-Maximin previously played in the Premier League for Newcastle United, where he became known for his dribbling ability and direct attacking style. His move to Lens represented a return to France, where he began his professional career with Saint-Étienne. Should he complete a move to Charlotte, it would mark a new chapter in his career and a significant addition to the MLS.
