Sandro Wagner, recently dismissed as manager of FC Augsburg, is a candidate to become the new head coach of Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town, according to Sky Germany. The Championship winners are searching for a replacement for Kieran McKenna, who departed following their promotion for personal reasons.
Wagner’s potential appointment comes after a short and ultimately unsuccessful spell with Augsburg, where he won only four of his 14 Bundesliga matches following his arrival in September. He was relieved of his duties in December, leaving him available for a swift return to management. Prior to Augsburg, Wagner had a stint managing Swiss Super League side Young Boys, achieving moderate success before returning to Germany.
As a player, Wagner represented Germany on 20 occasions, scoring five goals. He enjoyed a successful club career primarily in the Bundesliga, notably with Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, before finishing his playing days with Tianjin Quanjian in China. He is known for his direct, physical style of play as a forward, and has previously spoken about wanting to implement a similar intensity in his coaching.
Ipswich Town’s swift promotion from League One to the Premier League has left them seeking a manager capable of navigating the challenges of the top flight. McKenna’s departure created a vacancy that the club is aiming to fill quickly, and Wagner’s availability and experience, despite his recent setback, make him a viable option. Ipswich will be hoping Wagner can bring stability and a clear tactical vision to the club as they prepare for their first Premier League season in over two decades.
The move would represent a significant opportunity for Wagner to prove himself in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues, following a challenging period in his managerial career. Should he be appointed, Wagner will face the task of assembling a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and building on the momentum generated by McKenna’s promotion-winning side.
