Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr is expected to leave the club this summer following the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, according to Tottenham insider John Wenham. The club has invested a combined £185 million in the two midfielders, significantly strengthening their options in the centre of the park.
Wenham believes that Sarr will struggle for playing time under manager Roberto De Zerbi, with Tonali and Fernandes expected to form the first-choice partnership. Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher are also ahead of Sarr in the pecking order, with young prospects Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray also vying for a place in the squad.
Sarr joined Tottenham with promise, but featured in 26 Premier League games last season, with less than half of those appearances being starts. The Senegal international has not been able to establish himself as a consistent starter for the North London club.
Tottenham are reportedly hoping to secure a fee in the region of £25-30 million for Sarr, which would represent good business for a player who may not feature prominently in De Zerbi’s plans. The sale of Sarr could further contribute to a summer of significant financial activity for Spurs, who have already spent around £230 million on new signings. The club are also considering offers for Cristian Romero, with Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona all expressing interest in the centre-back.
The arrival of Fernandes and Tonali signals a clear intent from De Zerbi to reshape the Tottenham midfield, and Sarr appears to be a casualty of those changes. His departure would allow him to seek regular first-team football elsewhere, while providing Tottenham with funds to further strengthen their squad.
