Atalanta’s incoming manager Maurizio Sarri is closely monitoring Charles De Ketelaere’s performances with the Belgian national team, particularly his deployment as a central striker, according to reports in Italy. De Ketelaere has been utilized in a ‘false nine’ role by Belgium coach Rudi Garcia in recent friendlies, including a goal against Tunisia on Saturday, ahead of established forwards Romelu Lukaku and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
This tactical shift comes as Sarri prepares to take the reins at Atalanta, with an announcement regarding his appointment expected imminently. While Atalanta already possess established strikers in Gianluca Scamacca and Nikola Krstovic, Sarri is known for his tactical flexibility and may see De Ketelaere as a valuable alternative. The former Napoli and Juventus manager has previously favored formations such as 4-3-1-2 and 4-2-3-1, systems in which the Belgian could operate effectively in a central role.
De Ketelaere joined Atalanta last summer after a disappointing spell at AC Milan, where he failed to live up to expectations despite a significant transfer fee. At Bergamo, however, he has rediscovered his form, benefitting from the club’s faith in his abilities. He has become a key player for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, consistently delivering quality performances and demonstrating continuous growth. Across all competitions last season, the 25-year-old registered an impressive 32 goals and 31 assists.
The Belgian international himself has expressed his contentment at Atalanta, stating, “I have respect for my club, I have a contract for a few years, I feel good there.” He also reflected on his time at Milan, acknowledging he may not have been ready for that step at the time, but emphasizing his focus on performing well for his current club. Sarri’s arrival could unlock another dimension to De Ketelaere’s game, potentially utilizing his intelligence and playmaking abilities from a more central position. Belgium begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Egypt on June 15th, where De Ketelaere may be given the opportunity to showcase his skills as a leading striker.
