Serhou Guirassy’s release clause at Borussia Dortmund expired at midnight on Tuesday, giving the German club full control over the forward’s future and any potential transfer negotiations. The clause, set at just under €40 million, was only applicable to a select group of top European clubs, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal, according to reports.
Despite the relatively low release fee, none of those clubs formally pursued Guirassy, choosing not to activate the buyout option. This lack of interest from the Premier League and La Liga giants contrasts sharply with the strong interest shown by Turkish side Fenerbahce, who were reportedly prepared to make a significant offer for the 30-year-old. However, Guirassy ultimately turned down a move to Istanbul.
Guirassy joined Borussia Dortmund in 2023, having previously played for Rennes and Amiens. He has become a consistent goalscorer in the Bundesliga, though his role has often been rotational. His performances have consistently drawn attention, but a move away from the Westfalenstadion has not materialized despite frequent speculation.
The expiration of the release clause doesn’t necessarily signal an immediate departure for Guirassy, but it does mean Dortmund can now negotiate a transfer fee with any interested club. While the initial release clause limited their bargaining power, they are now free to seek a fee that reflects his value to the team. This development opens the door for potential bids from clubs who were previously deterred by the fixed clause, and could allow Dortmund to secure a more substantial transfer fee should they decide to sell. The situation leaves Guirassy’s future uncertain, but firmly in the hands of Borussia Dortmund.
