FC Schalke 04 have announced a contract extension for goalkeeper Loris Karius, securing his services until June 30, 2028. The deal comes ahead of schedule, rewarding Karius for his pivotal role in the club’s promotion back to the Bundesliga. The club confirmed the extension on their official website.
Karius initially joined Schalke in 2025 and quickly established himself as a key figure, becoming instrumental in their recent successes. Last season, the 32-year-old featured in 30 matches for Schalke in the 2.Bundesliga, keeping 13 clean sheets. The team’s defensive record was the best in the league, conceding just 31 goals throughout the campaign.
Schalke’s director of professional football, Youri Mulder, praised Karius’s impact, stating that the goalkeeper has consistently delivered strong performances and provided a reliable presence at the back. Mulder specifically highlighted Karius’s crucial saves in tight matches, emphasizing his ability to secure vital points for the team. This extension demonstrates the club’s faith in his abilities and his importance to their future plans.
Prior to his move to Schalke, Karius had a notable career with clubs including Mainz 05 and Liverpool. His time at Liverpool was punctuated by a Champions League title but also marred by high-profile errors in the 2018 final. Since then, he has rebuilt his career with consistent performances in Germany. The new contract signifies a long-term commitment from both Karius and Schalke, providing stability in a crucial position as they prepare for the challenges of the Bundesliga. This move solidifies Schalke’s goalkeeping situation and allows them to focus on strengthening other areas of the squad.
