Nico Schlotterbeck, the Borussia Dortmund centre-back, has indicated a preference for a move to Real Madrid over Liverpool, according to a report in Spanish publication El Debate. This development represents a setback for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who identified Schlotterbeck as a potential replacement for Ibrahima Konate following the defender’s recent transfer to Madrid.
Schlotterbeck recently signed a new contract with Dortmund in April, however, it includes a release clause reportedly between €50m-€60m (£52m/$68.8m) that both Liverpool and Real Madrid can activate this summer, as reported by Sky Germany and Bild. Liverpool were reportedly in talks with Schlotterbeck in late May, seeking a central defensive reinforcement after Konate departed as a free agent.
However, El Debate’s report suggests Schlotterbeck is keen to join Real Madrid and play alongside his Germany international teammate, Antonio Rudiger. The Spanish outlet claims the 26-year-old has “made it clear” his desire is to move to the Estadio Bernabeu. New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly seeking to bolster his defensive options after two trophy-less seasons.
Rudiger has publicly endorsed Madrid’s pursuit of Schlotterbeck, alongside fellow Dortmund player Felix Nmecha. Quoted by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Rudiger stated, “Good players are always welcome…I’d be happy,” regarding the potential arrivals. He further praised Schlotterbeck’s attributes, highlighting his aerial ability, aggression, and build-up play, describing his left foot as “gold.”
Schlotterbeck is currently representing Germany at the 2026 World Cup, and is considered to be at the peak of his powers. His potential arrival at Real Madrid would add further quality to their squad, while Liverpool will now need to reassess their options in the transfer market to fill the void left by Konate’s departure.
