Manchester City have begun reshaping their squad following the departure of manager Pep Guardiola, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones among the confirmed departures this summer. Silva, released on a free transfer at age 31, leaves after nine seasons with the club, having made a remarkable 460 appearances since joining from Monaco in 2017. The Portuguese midfielder secured six Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium and described his exit as a natural progression, seeking a “last chance to take on another challenge.” His next destination remains undisclosed.
Centre-back John Stones has also departed the club upon the expiration of his contract, ending a ten-year association with City. Despite facing challenges with injuries throughout his career, Stones made 294 appearances for the club and expressed pride in his achievements during a final interview with club media. Several clubs are reportedly interested in signing the England international.
Manuel Akanji’s move to Inter Milan has been made permanent after a successful loan spell. Inter triggered the obligation to buy clause in his loan agreement by winning Serie A and meeting the appearance threshold, resulting in a £13 million transfer. Akanji played 136 times for City across three seasons before becoming a key figure in Inter’s title-winning campaign, featuring in 45 games.
The club is now preparing for life under new manager Enzo Maresca, and addressing the gaps left by Silva and Stones will be a priority. City are reportedly pursuing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest to bolster their midfield options, and a new right-back could also be targeted. The future of goalkeeper James Trafford is also under consideration, having spent much of the recent season as a substitute, while winger Savinho is understood to be available for transfer. These moves signal a clear intention to evolve the squad as City enters a new chapter.
