Diego Pablo Simeone has committed his future to Atletico Madrid, signing a contract extension to remain as the club’s manager, according to statements made following their 1-0 victory over Girona on the final matchday at the Metropolitano. The Argentinian confirmed the news himself, stating he was already considering plans for the upcoming season and hoping to add new players to the squad.
The announcement came on a day when Antoine Griezmann received a farewell from the Atletico faithful, highlighting a changing of the guard at the club. Simeone acknowledged the passage of time, reflecting on 15 years with Atletico and questioning whether to continue, ultimately deciding to remain due to the collective ambition within the club and the positive impact it has on its supporters. He emphasized the club’s commitment to its players, pointing to Griezmann’s deserving send-off as an example.
Simeone initially joined Atletico Madrid in December 2011, transforming the club into a consistent challenger in both La Liga and European competitions. His tenure has yielded significant success, including two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup, two Europa League titles, and two UEFA Super Cups. He has overseen a period of sustained growth for Atletico, elevating their prestige on the continental stage.
Prior to his arrival in Madrid, Simeone had a distinguished playing career, featuring for clubs such as Inter Milan and Lazio. His managerial career began in Argentina before he took the helm at Atletico, where he has become synonymous with the club’s identity and success. His existing contract was set to expire in June 2027, and the terms of the extension were not disclosed by the club.
The extension ensures stability at the top of Atletico Madrid as they navigate a period of transition following Griezmann’s departure, and signals Simeone's continued belief in the project at the club. With Simeone at the helm, Atletico will aim to remain competitive in La Liga and challenge for European honors.
