Arne Slot’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, has indicated significant changes are expected at Liverpool this summer, with contract negotiations with midfielder Curtis Jones having “effectively ceased.” The news comes after a disappointing Premier League season for the Reds, despite substantial investment in new players exceeding £400 million last summer.
Pimenta, speaking to ESPN Netherlands, stated there “will definitely be many changes” at both Liverpool and Ajax, fueling speculation about Slot’s future despite reports suggesting he will retain his position as manager. She highlighted her involvement in Slot’s move to Anfield as a career highlight, recalling her long-time admiration for the club.
The potential departure of Jones, who has been linked with Inter Milan, would allow Liverpool to register a pure profit under the Premier League’s new squad cost ratio rules. However, Liverpool reporter David Lynch notes replacing a versatile, committed, and homegrown player will be challenging. Lynch suggests Jones’ desire for more playing time is a factor, but criticizes the club for not consistently utilizing his talents.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has expressed concern about the club’s direction under Slot, particularly regarding the type of players Liverpool should target. Carragher emphasized the need for physicality within the squad and warned against simply pursuing technically gifted players, as previous attempts have not yielded success. He also cautioned against solely replicating the style of play associated with former manager Jurgen Klopp.
Carragher pointed to the difficulty in securing top managerial talent, referencing recent appointments at Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea, and the importance of not missing out on a manager like Xabi Alonso. He stressed the need for Slot to establish a clear identity for the team, potentially prioritizing technical footballers, a direction that raises concerns for some observers about a shift away from Klopp’s successful formula. The club is at a crossroads, needing to define its future approach to player recruitment and tactical strategy.
Liverpool are currently assessing their options ahead of the summer transfer window, with several players potentially facing uncertain futures as Slot aims to reshape the squad to his liking.
