Hamburger SV defender Aboubaka Soumahoro has agreed to a season-long loan deal with RCD Mallorca, the German club confirmed on Friday. The 21-year-old will spend the 2026/27 campaign with the Spanish second division side, seeking regular first-team football.
Soumahoro joined Hamburger SV in January 2024 from Italian side Atalanta, but has struggled to establish himself in the Bundesliga. He spent the latter half of last season on loan at AS Saint-Étienne in France’s Ligue 2, however, that spell proved unsuccessful as he failed to make a single appearance for the club. Hamburger SV sporting director Claus Costa cited the need for consistent playing time as the primary motivation for the loan move.
“Abou’s loan spell at Saint-Étienne over the past six months didn’t go the way we had hoped,” Costa explained in a club statement. “In order to take the next step in his development, he needs regular minutes. That’s why we’ve decided on another loan for him.” Costa added that RCD Mallorca presented a suitable opportunity for Soumahoro to gain valuable experience.
Mallorca, who finished 13th in La Liga last season, will be hoping Soumahoro can bolster their defensive options. The loan move allows Hamburger SV to continue Soumahoro’s development without blocking a spot in their own squad, while giving the player a chance to prove his potential in a different league. The club intends to monitor his progress closely throughout the season.
The move represents a reset for Soumahoro, who will be aiming to make a significant impact at Mallorca and demonstrate the qualities that initially attracted Hamburger SV to him. A successful loan spell could potentially lead to a more permanent transfer in the future, either to Mallorca or another club.
