Tottenham Hotspur are poised to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke after having a third bid accepted, according to multiple reports. The club has already secured the services of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi as Roberto De Zerbi begins reshaping his squad ahead of the new season.
Brighton initially rejected two offers from Tottenham for the Dutch international, with the second reaching approximately £50 million. Despite van Hecke having only one year remaining on his current contract, Tottenham remained persistent in their pursuit, recognizing De Zerbi’s desire to reunite with a player he previously managed at the Seagulls.
Sources at TEAMtalk, including transfer insider Graeme Bailey and reporter Fraser Fletcher, confirmed that personal terms between Tottenham and van Hecke had been agreed upon. Fletcher reported on X that the defender is keen to complete the move, while Ben Jacobs added that there is optimism an agreement between the clubs would be reached.
Van Hecke, 26, has established himself as a key player for Brighton, making 30 appearances in the Premier League last season. His ability to play both centre-back and defensive midfield adds versatility to De Zerbi’s options. The quick succession of defensive signings signals Tottenham’s intent to address vulnerabilities at the back that plagued them in the previous campaign.
Elsewhere, Tottenham are also attempting to renegotiate the fee for Joao Palhinha, currently on loan from Bayern Munich, and are in advanced talks with Manchester City regarding a potential deal for Brazilian winger Savinho. The Savinho transfer is projected to cost between £50 million and £60 million, a price Tottenham were willing to meet last summer before City intervened.
