Tottenham Hotspur have ended their interest in Napoli’s Antonio Vergara, with the club now prioritizing a move for Manchester City winger Savinho, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Reports from Italian outlet Tuttosport had suggested Spurs were prepared to offer €25 million (£21 million) for the 23-year-old Vergara, who can play as an attacking midfielder or on the right wing, but Romano has dismissed these claims.
Romano stated on his YouTube channel that Vergara is set to sign a new contract with Napoli, including a salary increase, and was never a serious target for Tottenham. De Zerbi is undergoing a significant squad overhaul at Spurs, having already secured the services of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali this summer. The club has spent a combined £137 million on these acquisitions, signalling a clear intent to return to the Premier League’s top six.
Savinho, a 22-year-old Brazilian, was previously a target for Spurs last summer, with the club willing to pay £60 million for his signature. However, Manchester City rejected their approach and Savinho subsequently signed a new six-year contract with the Premier League champions. Tottenham have now reignited their pursuit, and Romano reports that Savinho has already agreed to the move, believing he will play a key role under De Zerbi.
While Savinho is the primary target, Tottenham are also monitoring Cody Gakpo of Liverpool and Rafael Leao of AC Milan. However, Liverpool are unwilling to sell Gakpo this summer, and while Leao has reportedly indicated his willingness to join Spurs in a €50 million (£42 million) deal, Savinho remains the preferred option. Spurs have also rejected an opening bid from Nottingham Forest for Lucas Bergvall, indicating the young player remains part of De Zerbi’s plans. The successful acquisition of Savinho would further strengthen Tottenham’s attacking options ahead of the new season.
