Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as strong contenders to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, reportedly submitting an £85 million (€99m, $112m) package for the player, according to sources cited by TEAMtalk. This development throws Manchester United’s pursuit of Fernandes into doubt, despite the Red Devils having held talks with the player and his representatives for several weeks.
Fernandes is expected to leave West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League after a 14-year stay in the top flight. Despite a strong individual season, he was unable to prevent the Hammers’ drop, making him available for transfer to the highest bidder. Manchester United initially appeared to be leading the chase, with reports suggesting Fernandes had given them a strong indication he would accept a move to Old Trafford.
However, West Ham’s firm stance on their £80 million valuation has complicated matters, with United adopting a strategy of waiting for the club to lower their demands. Tottenham’s late entry into the race appears to have disrupted this plan, with Spurs willing to exceed both West Ham’s asking price and Manchester United’s offer to the player.
Former West Ham and Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince expressed his surprise at the sums being discussed for Fernandes, noting the player’s recent relegation with Southampton prior to joining West Ham. Ince questioned whether Fernandes possesses the all-round qualities of legendary midfielders like Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, suggesting that such a substantial fee should be reserved for a proven goalscorer. Should Fernandes move to Tottenham, it would represent a club-record transfer fee for the North London side. Manchester United are reportedly considering alternative midfield targets, including Alex Scott of Bournemouth and Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid, should they fail to secure Fernandes.
