Tottenham Hotspur are currently in negotiations with the representatives of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to Fabrizio Romano. The move comes as both Tottenham and Manchester United vie for the 21-year-old’s signature, with West Ham having reportedly cleared Fernandes to leave following their relegation to the Championship.
West Ham are seeking a fee of £85 million for Fernandes, a valuation that has so far deterred clubs such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United have made progress in personal terms with the player, but the late entry of Tottenham, driven by manager Roberto De Zerbi, has complicated the situation. Romano reports that Tottenham are actively pushing to reach an agreement with Fernandes and his agent, Jorge Mendes.
While Manchester United remain firmly in the race, continuing discussions with both West Ham and Fernandes’ camp, Tottenham appear to be gaining ground. Romano also suggests a potential, though currently less active, interest from Real Madrid, with José Mourinho having previously identified Fernandes as a midfield option. The key to securing Fernandes’ signature appears to be the financial proposal presented to West Ham, with the London club hoping to spark a bidding war to maximize the transfer fee.
West Ham’s de facto owner, Daniel Kretinsky, is reportedly keen to avoid a mass exodus this summer, and views Fernandes as the single major sale required to fund the club’s rebuild. This stance could impact Manchester United’s pursuit of another West Ham player, Crysencio Summerville, though Arsenal have emerged as potential rivals in that deal. Should West Ham achieve their £85 million valuation for Fernandes, they aim to retain the majority of their squad.
