Tottenham Hotspur have entered the pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, challenging Manchester United for his signature, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The development is reportedly ‘driven by’ new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who wants Fernandes alongside Sandro Tonali as part of his midfield rebuild.
Fernandes enjoyed a standout season for West Ham, despite their relegation from the Premier League. The club have now given him the green light to leave the London Stadium, but are seeking a fee of £80 million for the player. This valuation has reportedly deterred Manchester United from making a second bid, as they hope West Ham will lower their demands.
The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell explained that United are hesitant to meet the £80 million price tag, and may attempt to structure a deal with a lower initial fee and performance-based add-ons. Whitwell suggests United believe they have a ‘good chance’ of securing Fernandes, but are playing a waiting game to try and negotiate a more favorable price.
Tottenham’s entry into the race complicates matters, potentially sparking a bidding war. De Zerbi’s desire to sign Fernandes suggests the player fits his tactical vision for the team. The Italian manager is also keen on acquiring Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, indicating a significant overhaul of Tottenham’s midfield is planned.
West Ham also anticipate interest in teammate Crysencio Summerville, with Manchester United reportedly offering the winger a five-year deal worth around £50 million. Any move for Fernandes or Summerville would provide a significant financial boost for West Ham as they prepare for life in the Championship. The club’s high asking prices reflect their need to generate funds following relegation.
Should Fernandes move to either Manchester United or Tottenham, he would be expected to immediately slot into a starting role, providing creativity and dynamism in midfield. His departure would leave a significant void in West Ham’s squad, requiring them to find a suitable replacement in the transfer market.
