Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to make a significant investment in a new striker this summer, with Brentford’s Igor Thiago identified as a prime target. The call for a ‘big buy’ comes as Spurs battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, currently sitting just one point above the drop zone with three games remaining.
According to Paul O’Keefe, a well-informed Tottenham insider, the club needs to acquire a forward capable of scoring 25 goals a season. When pressed for a specific recommendation, O’Keefe pointed to Thiago, stating simply, “He’s a player.” This comes as Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi looks to reshape the squad and prevent a repeat of their current precarious position.
Thiago has enjoyed a breakout season with Brentford, scoring 25 goals in total, with 22 coming in the Premier League. This tally places him second in the league’s scoring charts, trailing only Erling Haaland. He spent a significant portion of the previous campaign recovering from injury, making this season his first full opportunity to showcase his abilities in the Premier League.
Brentford are reportedly preparing for the possibility of Thiago’s departure, already identifying potential replacements, including Ukrainian forward Matviy Ponomarenko, who has 15 goals in all competitions this season. TEAMtalk reports that Brentford are aware of interest from multiple clubs, including Tottenham and Chelsea. Manchester City and Newcastle United have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
Competition for Thiago’s signature is expected to be fierce. Chelsea are already confirmed as rivals in the pursuit, and Tottenham’s relatively low league position – unlikely to improve beyond 17th this season – may hinder their ability to attract a player of Thiago’s caliber. Securing European football will be crucial for Tottenham to compete with other interested clubs. Thiago’s impressive goal-scoring record suggests he will likely seek a move to a club with greater ambitions and a stronger track record of success.
