Tottenham Hotspur have opened discussions with Como regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Martin Baturina, according to reports from Matteo Moretto, a collaborator of Fabrizio Romano. This move forms part of a significant rebuilding effort led by manager Roberto De Zerbi, with the club also pursuing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
Spurs narrowly avoided relegation last season and are determined to construct a squad capable of challenging for European qualification. The club has already secured free transfers for Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson, along with Jan Paul van Hecke for a reported £52 million, strengthening their defensive options. Now, the focus has shifted to reinforcing the midfield.
Discussions are reportedly underway with the agent of Mateus Fernandes, and Tottenham are prepared to meet both his wage demands and West Ham’s £80 million asking price. Simultaneously, the club is in negotiations with Newcastle United to bring Italy international Sandro Tonali to North London. An agreement has reportedly been reached with Tonali over a six-year contract, and a fee of up to £90 million is being discussed.
In addition to these pursuits, Tottenham has expressed interest in Baturina, who impressed in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas at Como. The 23-year-old Croatian playmaker also scored a notable goal against England at the World Cup. However, securing Baturina’s signature may prove difficult, as Como are reportedly reluctant to sell and have placed an €80 million (£69 million) price tag on the player. Interest from Bayern Munich further complicates matters, though their recent signing of Ismael Saibari may lessen their pursuit.
Como’s desire to retain Baturina and Nico Paz, who recently returned to the club from Real Madrid, stems from their importance to Fabregas’ plans. Should Tottenham succeed in acquiring Baturina, Tonali, and Fernandes, the total investment in midfield reinforcements would reach a substantial £239 million. This level of spending underscores the club’s ambition to avoid another season battling relegation and signals a commitment to building a competitive squad. The potential arrival of Baturina could also impact the role of James Maddison, who is returning from a long-term ACL injury.
