Stade Rennais have officially announced the signing of goalkeeper Guillaume Martin from USL League One side Forward Madison FC, the club confirmed on Friday. Martin, 23, joins the Brittany-based club on a three-year contract, bolstering their goalkeeping options ahead of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season.
Martin spent the past two seasons with Forward Madison, establishing himself as a key player for the Wisconsin-based club. He made 58 appearances across all competitions, earning recognition for his shot-stopping ability and command of his area. While playing in the third tier of American soccer, Martin’s performances attracted the attention of several European clubs, with Rennes ultimately winning the race for his signature.
The move represents a significant step up in Martin's career, transitioning from the USL League One to one of France’s top flight leagues. Stade Rennais are looking to strengthen their squad after finishing seventh in Ligue 1 last season, narrowly missing out on European qualification. The club has been actively scouting for emerging talent, and Martin fits their profile of a young, promising goalkeeper with potential for growth.
Stade Rennais currently have Alfred Gomis and Yann Sommer as their senior goalkeepers, but the addition of Martin provides competition and long-term cover. The signing also demonstrates Rennes’ commitment to identifying and developing talent from non-traditional footballing nations. This transfer is not expected to impact any other goalkeeping targets for the club, but rather adds depth to the position. The club will be hoping Martin can adapt quickly to the demands of European football and contribute to their ambitions in the upcoming season.
