Manchester United are facing a potential impasse with West Ham United over the transfer of midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer. The Red Devils are determined to sign the 21-year-old following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, but are unwilling to meet the Hammers’ £80 million asking price, according to sources at TEAMtalk.
United have already held discussions with Fernandes’ representatives and West Ham have reportedly given the player permission to leave the London Stadium. However, despite their relegation, West Ham are holding firm on their valuation, believing Fernandes to be the best young midfielder in the Premier League. They are prepared to play hardball, hoping to spark a bidding war for the Portuguese player.
United’s initial bid, the exact amount of which remains undisclosed, is expected to fall significantly short of the £80 million demand. The club reportedly values Fernandes in the region of £50-60 million and believe a deal can be struck within that range. This stance has prompted a warning from United to West Ham, stating they will not be “held to ransom” over the transfer, as reported by The Mirror’s John Cross.
The situation has been further complicated by interest from European giants Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid have reportedly made contact regarding a potential move, threatening to escalate the competition for Fernandes’ signature. While United are currently considered the frontrunners, the Spanish club’s entry into the race raises the possibility of West Ham receiving bids closer to their asking price.
Despite the increased competition, United remain hopeful that Fernandes will choose a move to Old Trafford. The player is reportedly keen to continue his career in England and is particularly attracted by the prospect of playing alongside Bruno Fernandes, whom he idolizes. However, West Ham appear prepared to wait for offers from overseas, potentially forcing United to increase their bid to secure the deal.
This pursuit of Fernandes comes amid other transfer activity for United, with recent reports suggesting a potential double raid on West Ham, also targeting a new wide player. However, a separate deal for a winger has reportedly fallen through, with the player rejecting a move to Old Trafford in favour of Newcastle United.
