England international Raheem Sterling was arrested on Thursday morning in Hampshire, southwest of London, while driving a Lamborghini. According to The Guardian, the 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, possession of drugs, and refusing to submit to a breathalyser test. He has since been released on bail and is presumed innocent.
A source cited by The Sun newspaper indicated that Sterling has been experiencing “immeasurable psychological depression” following what have been described as two “extremely difficult” years. The source questioned how a prolific England international, who has been instrumental for the national team over the past decade, could feel “useless and forgotten.”
Sterling’s recent form has been impacted by a challenging period in his career. After leaving Chelsea at the end of the winter transfer window, he joined Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Netherlands. However, he made limited appearances for the Dutch club, accumulating only 333 minutes of playing time. Feyenoord are not expected to pursue a permanent deal for the winger this summer.
Sterling rose to prominence at Liverpool before securing a move to Manchester City in 2015, where he enjoyed a highly successful spell, winning multiple Premier League titles and domestic cups. He then transferred to Chelsea in 2022, but struggled to replicate his previous form and ultimately departed mid-season. The arrest and reports of his mental health struggles raise concerns about the player’s well-being and future prospects. This situation casts further doubt on his ability to regain his place as a key player for both club and country.
