Strasbourg have been issued a significant €13 million fine by UEFA following a review of the club’s finances, according to L’Équipe. The sanction stems from the club’s player wage bill – including the first team – exceeding 70% of its total revenue, a breach of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
The fine equates to the earnings Strasbourg received from their run to the semi-finals of last season’s Europa League. Should the club fail to reduce this percentage within the next year, a further €12 million penalty will be imposed. This financial pressure is expected to force Strasbourg into selling several key players this summer to balance the books.
Adding to the club’s difficulties, forward Emanuel Emegha has announced his departure from Strasbourg. Reports, initially appearing on Wikipedia, strongly suggest Chelsea as his next destination, though the nature of the transfer – loan or permanent – and any associated fee remain undisclosed at this time. Emegha arrived at Strasbourg in July 2023 from Sturm Graz, quickly establishing himself as a key attacking threat, scoring eight goals in 32 Ligue 1 appearances.
Strasbourg finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season, securing a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds. However, the UEFA fine and the potential loss of players like Emegha cast a shadow over the club’s future prospects. The financial constraints will undoubtedly impact their ability to compete at the same level in the upcoming season, potentially hindering their ambitions in both domestic and European competitions. The sale of Emegha, should it materialize, would represent a significant loss of attacking firepower for the Alsatian club, and necessitate finding a suitable replacement.
