Sunderland are keen to re-sign Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, with reports suggesting the Black Cats view him as a ‘dream signing’ as they prepare for life in the Premier League. According to the i Paper’s northern football correspondent, Mark Douglas, there have been ‘first rumblings’ regarding the 23-year-old’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
Diallo initially joined United from Atalanta in January 2021 for an initial £19million, a fee which could have risen to £37million with add-ons. While he has shown glimpses of potential, his opportunities have been limited, particularly following the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. He has not scored for United since December 15.
It was during a season-long loan at Sunderland in the 2022-23 Championship campaign where Diallo truly flourished, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists in 42 appearances. He quickly became a favourite with the club’s supporters as Sunderland reached the Championship play-off semi-finals, losing to Luton Town. Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray praised Diallo’s talent, describing him as a “genius” and highlighting his exceptional dribbling ability.
Sunderland have reportedly made ‘several’ unsuccessful attempts to secure Diallo’s return, and are expected to make another approach this summer. United currently have internal support for the player, but may be more willing to consider a sale as they look to rebuild their squad and raise funds, potentially through the sale of players like Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Marcus Rashford. A convincing offer from Sunderland could therefore alter United’s position.
While Michael Carrick currently views Mbeumo as his first choice in Diallo’s position, the possibility of a departure for other players at Old Trafford could open the door for Diallo to secure a more prominent role, or for Sunderland to finally land their target.
