Sunderland have announced the signing of Thomas Meunier on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Lille, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Belgian international has agreed to a contract that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2028, marking his first foray into the Premier League. The move sees Sunderland add significant experience to their squad ahead of their Europa League campaign.
Meunier joins Sunderland after a spell with Lille, where he became a key figure in their defence. Prior to his time in France, the right-back spent several seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, winning multiple Ligue 1 titles and gaining Champions League experience. He has consistently been a part of the Belgian national team setup, most recently featuring in their World Cup campaign where they were eliminated by Spain in the quarter-finals.
The defender cited Sunderland’s ambition and project as key factors in his decision, stating he was “impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to move forward” at the club. He also acknowledged the opportunity to compete in Europe as a significant draw, having played 42 matches in European competition throughout his career. Sunderland’s qualification for the Europa League, achieved through a strong finish in the Championship, proved crucial in attracting Meunier.
Sunderland manager Michael Beale will be hoping Meunier’s arrival will solidify the team’s defensive options and provide leadership both on and off the pitch. The club will be looking to build on their successful return to the Premier League and make a mark in European competition. Meunier could potentially make his Premier League debut on August 22nd against Ipswich Town, providing he is fully fit and integrated into the squad. His experience will be vital as Sunderland navigate a demanding season balancing domestic and continental commitments.
