Domenico Tedesco is poised to become the new manager of Bologna following the mutual termination of Vincenzo Italiano’s contract, according to reports emerging from Italy on Thursday. Italiano and Bologna reached an agreement to end their association after two years, a period which saw the club win the Coppa Italia and reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The club confirmed that Italiano, whose contract ran until June 2027, has departed.
Italiano addressed supporters after a meeting at Bologna’s training ground, Casteldebole, stating that he and the club parted on good terms and expressing confidence in the future direction of the team. He reassured fans that the club is “in good hands” and will continue to build for success. The swiftness of the managerial change suggests Bologna have already identified and moved for their preferred replacement.
Tedesco, an Italo-German coach, has emerged as the leading candidate to take over at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. Sources indicate Bologna are prepared to make a significant push to secure his services, with an announcement potentially arriving in the coming days should an agreement be reached. Tedesco most recently managed Fenerbahçe, where he won the Turkish Super Cup, but was dismissed in April.
Tedesco’s managerial career began in Germany, where he gained prominence during his time at RB Leipzig, guiding them to a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga and winning the DFB-Pokal in the 2021/2022 season. Prior to that, he managed Schalke 04, achieving a second-place league finish and reaching the Champions League round of 16. He also spent time with Spartak Moscow and Erzgebirge Aue, demonstrating a varied and adaptable coaching background. A spell in charge of the Belgian national team did not yield the desired results.
The appointment of Tedesco would signal Bologna’s ambition to build upon their recent successes and potentially challenge for European qualification on a consistent basis. His experience in multiple European leagues and track record of developing teams could prove valuable as Bologna look to establish themselves as a force in Serie A.
