Bologna manager Domenico Tedesco is making the retention of midfielder Remo Freuler a key priority, despite the player’s contract expiring this summer. According to reports in Italy, Tedesco envisions a flexible squad capable of adapting to multiple tactical systems, and views the experienced Swiss international as crucial to those plans.
Freuler himself recently indicated openness to remaining at the club, stating after a Serie A match against Inter that “the doors are open” for a potential renewal. Negotiations between the player’s representatives and Bologna are ongoing, though a significant gap remains between demand and offer. Tedesco is reportedly keen to engage directly in discussions, potentially leveraging his communication skills – even suggesting speaking to Freuler in German – to persuade the midfielder to stay.
The 31-year-old Freuler has been a consistent performer for Bologna since arriving at the club, bringing both experience and quality to the midfield. He featured regularly throughout the recent Serie A season, demonstrating his continued ability to influence matches. Interest from other Italian clubs and teams in Saudi Arabia has been reported, but Tedesco is determined to counter those potential advances.
However, Bologna appear less likely to retain defender Jhon Lucumi. The club anticipates his departure, with interest coming from the Premier League and other Serie A sides. Lucumi arrived at Bologna in 2022 and has proven to be a reliable defensive presence, but appears set to move on. Tedesco is considering defensive options, including Fedde Leysen of Union SG, potentially to fill a role in a three-man defensive system that he has utilized in the past. The manager is known for his tactical flexibility, having employed formations ranging from a 3-4-2-1 to a 3-4-3, and even a 4-2-3-1.
Tedesco’s preferred system is expected to be a 4-2-3-1, similar to the setup he used with Belgium, where Kevin De Bruyne operated behind the strikers. Bologna’s Bernardeschi is also capable of fulfilling a similar role, while the manager will also assess whether Odgaard fits his tactical vision. Regardless of the formation, Tedesco clearly believes Freuler is a vital component of his plans for the future, and is committed to securing his services beyond the current season.
