Ajax Amsterdam are reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen this summer, with newly appointed head coach Michel identifying the German international as a potential target. The news, as reported by Mundo Deportivo and Sport, comes after Michel secured the Ajax position following a successful five-year spell at Girona.
Michel previously signed ter Stegen during a loan spell at Girona in the latter half of last season, though the move was unfortunately cut short by a hamstring injury that prematurely ended the 34-year-old’s campaign after just two appearances. Despite the brief stint, the coach clearly saw potential in the experienced shot-stopper.
Ter Stegen remains under contract with Bayern Munich until 2028, but his future at the club appears uncertain under the leadership of Hansi Flick, who is not believed to view the goalkeeper as a key part of his plans. The injury sustained at Girona also saw ter Stegen miss out on a place in the German squad for the recent World Cup.
Ajax are familiar with German goalkeepers, having recently concluded an 18-month spell with Diant Ramaj before his transfer to Borussia Dortmund. The Amsterdam club will compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season after securing their place through a penalty shootout victory over Utrecht in the Eredivisie playoff final. The club finished fifth in the Eredivisie, a disappointing result for a team of their stature.
This move represents a potential opportunity for ter Stegen to secure regular first-team football, something that appears increasingly unlikely at Bayern. For Ajax, bringing in a goalkeeper with ter Stegen’s experience and pedigree could be a significant step in rebuilding their squad following a challenging season. The transfer fee and contract details have not yet been disclosed, but negotiations are expected to begin shortly.
