Tim Walter will remain as head coach of Holstein Kiel after rejecting an approach from recently relegated Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, according to Sky Germany. An agreement has been reached for Walter to extend his contract with Kiel, with an official announcement expected imminently.
Wolfsburg reportedly made a late attempt to secure Walter’s services over the past 24 hours, hoping to appoint the 50-year-old ahead of the 2026-27 season. However, Walter has informed Kiel’s director of sport, Olaf Rebbe, of his decision to stay with the 2.Bundesliga club, spurning the opportunity to return to the Bundesliga.
Walter took charge of Holstein Kiel mid-season, inheriting a team struggling to find form. He oversaw five victories, two draws, and four defeats, ultimately guiding the club to a 12th-place finish in the 2.Bundesliga. Prior to joining Kiel, Walter managed Hamburger SV for two seasons, achieving promotion to the 2.Bundesliga in his first campaign but failing to secure a return to the Bundesliga in the subsequent year.
This decision demonstrates Walter’s commitment to the project at Kiel, despite the allure of managing a club with Bundesliga ambitions. Wolfsburg will now continue their search for a new head coach, seeking a figure to lead their immediate push for promotion back to the German top flight. Walter’s continued leadership at Kiel provides stability and a clear direction for the club as they prepare for the next season.
