Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee that could rise to £100million, making him the club’s record signing. The 26-year-old midfielder joins Spurs after three seasons at St James’ Park, becoming the sixth addition to the squad this summer.
Tottenham initially had an £80million bid rejected by Newcastle, but ultimately reached an agreement for an initial £92.5million, with a further £7.5million contingent on add-ons. Tonali joins Mateus Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham for £85million, alongside Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka as new arrivals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tonali expressed his delight at joining the club, stating that Tottenham was his only choice despite reported interest from other clubs. He highlighted a lengthy conversation with Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi, discussing the club’s vision and fan base, as pivotal in his decision. He also noted a positive experience playing against Tottenham previously, citing the atmosphere created by the supporters.
Sporting Director Johan Lange praised Tonali’s technical ability, intelligence, and character, believing he will thrive in a demanding environment. Lange also emphasized the value Tonali’s experience will bring to the squad, both domestically and in European competition. De Zerbi, who previously managed Tonali’s youth club Brescia, also expressed his happiness at securing the player’s signature, noting the widespread interest in him this summer.
In a separate move, centre-back Radu Dragusin is set to join Fiorentina on loan, with an obligation to buy. According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is verbally agreed, and Dragusin has approved the move. This return to Serie A offers Dragusin a chance to rebuild his career after struggling to secure a regular starting position following an ACL injury. The transfer also reunites him with Fiorentina sporting director Fabio Paratici, who was involved in his initial move to Tottenham.
Tottenham are also reportedly working on further additions, with a significant offer planned for an unnamed Premier League attacker and renewed interest in a left-wing target.
