Tottenham Hotspur have launched a determined pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the player reportedly keen on a move to North London, according to Fabrizio Romano. The development comes as Newcastle assess their options following a season where they missed out on European qualification.
Tonali’s agent has been sounding out potential suitors, including Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City, but Tottenham have emerged as the frontrunners, driven by manager Roberto De Zerbi’s desire to sign the Italy international. A significant factor in this push is the personal connection between De Zerbi and Tonali, both hailing from the city of Brescia in Italy.
Romano stated that De Zerbi is “pushing internally” at Tottenham to secure Tonali’s signature, citing the strong bond stemming from their shared hometown. While Tonali’s current contract with Newcastle extends to 2029, with an option for a further year, the club are open to considering offers, reportedly seeking a fee in the region of €100 million.
Despite interest from other top clubs, Tottenham’s proactive approach and De Zerbi’s influence appear to have given them an edge. Romano reports that Tonali is “ready to join Spurs even without European football,” attracted by the project and the opportunity to work with De Zerbi. While Arsenal and Manchester City have registered interest, they have not yet made concrete offers.
Newcastle paid €60 million for Tonali in 2023, and are in a strong negotiating position, but Tottenham’s willingness to meet their valuation will be crucial. Although Tonali is settled in the North East, having recently become a father, the lure of playing under De Zerbi and the ambitious project at Tottenham are proving persuasive. The coming weeks will be pivotal as Tottenham attempt to finalize a deal and avoid competition from other clubs.
Tonali is not currently a priority target for Arsenal or Manchester United, while Manchester City may consider a move depending on the plans of incoming manager Enzo Maresca. This leaves Tottenham in a strong position to secure the midfielder, provided they can agree a fee with Newcastle.
