Roma have officially announced the appointment of Tony D'Amico as their new Sporting Director, becoming the fourth such appointment under the Friedkin ownership following Pinto, Ghisolfi, and Massara. The club confirmed the move on Wednesday, with D'Amico set to begin his role on July 1st. Maurizio Lombardo will fulfill the duties of Sporting Director on an interim basis until then.
D'Amico arrives from Atalanta, where he spent four successful seasons working alongside coach Gian Piero Gasperini. During his time in Bergamo, the club secured qualification for the Europa League and achieved three Champions League appearances. While the relationship reportedly had moments of tension, Atalanta also saw significant player sales during his tenure, including those of Rasmus Hojlund and Lorenzo Retegui.
The club statement expressed their pleasure in welcoming D'Amico and wished him the best in his new role. Roma were reportedly met with resistance from Atalanta in securing D'Amico's immediate release, leading to the July 1st start date. The delay was due to Atalanta not granting a waiver to allow his early departure.
According to reports, D'Amico’s first task could be the signing of Mason Greenwood. It is claimed the English forward has already agreed to a four-year contract with Roma after speaking with Gasperini. Negotiations with Marseille are ongoing, with Roma’s ownership assuring Greenwood they will make a strong effort to secure his transfer. A potential sale of Paulo Dybala, valued between €35-40 million, could provide Roma with the funds to increase their offer and move closer to Marseille’s €50 million asking price.
