Dino Toppmöller has begun his tenure as RC Lens manager with a convincing 4-1 friendly victory over US Boulogne on Saturday afternoon. The German coach, appointed mid-June, saw his side dominate the match, with goals from Florian Thauvin, a brace from Mezian Mesloub, and Florian Sotoca securing the win. Martin Lecolier scored the sole goal for Boulogne.
Toppmöller expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance after the final whistle, noting the positive signs despite only having one week of training with the squad. Speaking in fluent French, he highlighted the players’ willingness and dedication, while acknowledging areas for improvement, particularly in defensive organization, pressing, and attacking fluidity. He stated that building these aspects will take time.
This friendly serves as an important stepping stone for Lens as they prepare for the Trophée des Champions against Paris Saint-Germain on August 16th at the Stade Bollaert. This will be Toppmöller’s first competitive match in charge and a significant early test for the Racing Club de Lens. The appointment of Toppmöller, a disciple of Julian Nagelsmann, signals a new tactical direction for the club.
Lens will be hoping to build on their strong performance from last season, where they secured their place in Ligue 1. The club has also seen Angelo Fulgini depart, returning to Saudi Arabia, while there has been speculation surrounding Hazard’s potential return to French football. The victory over Boulogne offers an encouraging start to the new campaign under the leadership of Toppmöller, suggesting a positive outlook for the team’s prospects.
