Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee that could rise to €117 million, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The deal represents a significant investment in midfield talent for Spurs, following their agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for €98 million just yesterday.
This move comes after Tottenham improved their initial offer for the Italy international, with the final package including over €100 million in upfront payments to Newcastle. The Magpies had previously indicated a reluctance to sell the 26-year-old, but Tonali’s desire to leave, coupled with the substantial offer, proved decisive.
Newcastle will make a considerable profit on Tonali, having paid at least €58.9 million for him initially, with some reports suggesting an even higher initial fee. Tonali joined Newcastle in 2023 and quickly established himself as a key player in midfield, contributing to their Champions League qualification. He has 16 senior caps for Italy.
The transfer breaks Tottenham’s club record for a second consecutive day, surpassing the fee agreed for Fernandes. With the additions of Tonali and Fernandes, alongside free signings Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for €60m, Tottenham’s total spending this summer is set to exceed €275 million. This level of investment signals a change in approach for the North London club, moving away from the more frugal spending of the Daniel Levy era.
Several other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United, had expressed interest in Tonali, but were ultimately unwilling to match Tottenham’s financial commitment. Spurs’ willingness to meet Newcastle’s valuation proved to be the deciding factor in securing the midfielder’s signature. The club may still look to add a striker before the transfer window closes, with concerns over the current options of Richarlison and Dominic Solanke.
