Tottenham Hotspur are poised to submit a bid of £100 million for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to transfer insider reports. The move is being driven by new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who sees Tonali as a key component in rebuilding the team’s midfield ahead of next season.
Spurs have already been active in the transfer window, securing Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers, and completing a £52 million deal for Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton. The club is also reportedly considering the sale of players such as Guglielmo Vicario, Lucas Bergvall, and Cristian Romero to further fund new acquisitions.
Tottenham’s initial £75 million offer for Tonali was rejected, but the club believes a £100 million bid will be enough to convince Newcastle to part with the Italian international. Newcastle reportedly value Tonali in the same price range, and the potential sale would provide significant funds for Eddie Howe to pursue reinforcements. Manchester City are also said to be monitoring Tonali’s situation.
Should the transfer go through, it would represent a new club record for Tottenham, surpassing the £65 million spent on Dominic Solanke in August 2024. Club officials acknowledge a need for increased investment in both transfer fees and player wages to address recent declines in performance. De Zerbi views Tonali as a statement signing to signal a new era at the club.
Newcastle are already exploring potential replacements for Tonali, with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha emerging as a primary target. Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reports that Newcastle are ‘considering a move’ for Nmecha, who has an €85 million (£73m) release clause in his contract. Nmecha was previously a target for the Magpies in the summer of 2023.
Interest also surrounds Tonali’s midfield partner, Bruno Guimaraes, with Arsenal and Liverpool both reportedly preparing bids. Arsenal have already had an £55 million offer rejected and are preparing a new bid worth £80 million. However, Newcastle are expected to allow only one of Tonali or Guimaraes to leave this summer.
