Tottenham Hotspur have agreed personal terms with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali and are prepared to exceed £100 million to secure his signature, according to multiple sources including Fraser Fletcher of TEAMtalk. The move signals a significant show of ambition from Tottenham, despite their absence from European competition next season.
The 26-year-old Tonali is expected to earn close to £300,000 per week, including bonuses, should he complete the transfer to North London. Tottenham are reportedly willing to meet Newcastle’s valuation, making this a potential club-record deal for the London club. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is being heavily backed in the transfer window, with the Tonali acquisition a key component of his midfield rebuild.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for £60 million, becoming a key figure in Eddie Howe’s side. He made 34 Premier League appearances, contributing to their Champions League qualification. His arrival at Tottenham would provide a significant upgrade in midfield quality and experience. Spurs are also pursuing a deal for Mateus Fernandes of West Ham, though face competition from Manchester United and potentially Manchester City.
In a separate development, Tottenham have refused to allow Lucas Bergvall to leave the club, despite the Sweden international expressing concerns about his playing time. De Zerbi and sporting director Johan Lange have both spoken with Bergvall, assuring him of his role in the team’s future. Bergvall signed a new contract until 2031 in April, further solidifying the club’s stance. Officials from Tottenham confirmed to TEAMtalk that Bergvall is not for sale at this time.
This decision highlights De Zerbi’s belief in Bergvall’s potential and the importance of squad depth, particularly with the prospect of future European campaigns. The club views the 20-year-old as a valuable asset for the future, and are keen to nurture his development within the team.
