Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is reportedly eager to join Newcastle United this summer, with manager Eddie Howe identified as a key factor in the player’s desire to move to St. James’ Park. The news comes as Trafford seeks more regular first-team football after largely serving as a backup during the 2025/26 season.
According to sources cited by TEAMtalk, Trafford informed people last summer he was signing for Newcastle, but a move ultimately failed to materialize as Manchester City secured his services. Now, the 23-year-old is again expressing a preference for a transfer to the Magpies, though a deal remains complex. Luke Edwards, a journalist with extensive coverage of Newcastle United, reported on X that Trafford has been “making positive noises” about returning to Newcastle.
Manchester City are understood to be demanding a fee of at least £40 million for Trafford, recognizing his potential and the need to secure a replacement. The club are reportedly considering Pierce Charles, the goalkeeper for Sheffield Wednesday, as a potential successor. Trafford joined Manchester City last summer but found his opportunities limited behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Newcastle’s pursuit of Trafford is not without competition, however. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Leeds United have all been linked with an interest in the England international. Tottenham are reportedly considering Trafford as a potential replacement for Guglielmo Vicario, while Aston Villa are assessing goalkeeping options with the future of Emiliano Martinez uncertain. This increased competition could drive up the transfer fee and complicate negotiations for Newcastle.
