Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has informed the club he is unwilling to continue as a back-up player, with Newcastle United emerging as the frontrunners to secure his signature, according to TEAMtalk. The 23-year-old England international made his senior debut for the national team in March and is now seeking regular first-team football to further his career.
Trafford returned to the Etihad Stadium last summer in a £30million deal from Burnley, anticipating a genuine opportunity to establish himself as City’s number one goalkeeper. However, the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma altered those plans, limiting Trafford to a bit-part role despite starting in both the League Cup and FA Cup finals as City completed a domestic double. His representatives have since communicated to sporting director Hugo Viana that the player does not want a repeat of the previous season.
Newcastle’s interest in Trafford is well-established, having previously submitted a £30million bid last summer. The Magpies believe Trafford possesses the potential to become a leading Premier League goalkeeper, and the feeling is reportedly mutual, with the player attracted by Eddie Howe’s ambitious project at St James’ Park. A move to Newcastle is viewed positively by Trafford, offering the prospect of becoming a key figure for both club and country.
While Newcastle are currently considered ‘genuine contenders’ for Trafford’s signature, they face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Chelsea, all of whom are monitoring the situation as they assess their own goalkeeping options. However, Manchester City are expected to demand a fee exceeding £40million for Trafford, seeking a profit on the £30million they paid to Burnley, given their high valuation of the player. The imminent appointment of Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor does not appear to change the club’s stance on a potential sale if Trafford pushes for a move.
